1. What is SINGA? SINGA is a collaboration between the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (ASTAR), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Management University (SMU), and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). It’s an award for international students with outstanding academic undergraduate and/or master’s results, with a strong interest in pursuing research leading to a Ph.D. in Science and Engineering at a Singaporean University. Students have the option to conduct their research primarily at ASTAR and NTU/NUS/SMU/SUTD. The Ph.D. degree will be conferred by NTU, NUS, SMU, or SUTD, and there is no bond.
2. Am I required to take up citizenship and/or work in Singapore after graduation? No, you are not required to obtain citizenship or work in Singapore after graduation. However, international Ph.D. graduates can explore career opportunities in Singapore after completing their studies.
3. Why does the SINGA office offer scholarships for a direct Ph.D. program instead of the normal master’s program followed by doctoral studies? Singapore Institutions typically admit students with a Bachelor’s degree for graduate work leading to a Ph.D. SINGA awardees usually complete their Ph.D. studies in 4 years.
4. Will graduate students be more competitive than undergraduates? Graduate students will be assessed more closely on their research experience compared to undergraduates. Success in the SINGA application process depends on the project submission and interview.
5. Will my university admission application be separately considered if I am not awarded for the SINGA Scholarship? If you are successful in the SINGA Scholarship application process, you will be contacted for university admission without needing to submit a separate application. If you wish to be considered separately for university admission, you must apply to both SINGA Scholarship and the university concurrently.
6. How many awards will be offered each year? SINGA Scholarship are offered once a year for the August intake. The January intake (2025 and 2026) is exclusively open to applicants interested in working with A*STAR and/or NTU supervisors.
7. Is your interview a face-to-face interview or a Skype interview? SINGA interviews are typically conducted virtually, either through Skype or Zoom.
8. Is it possible for my spouse to come and stay with me in Singapore during my Ph.D. study? Accompanying spouses can apply for a social visit pass to stay in Singapore. Please refer to the respective university websites for more information.
9. Will my spouse be provided with any stipend? SINGA awardees accompanied by their spouses will not receive additional stipends.
