Merck is offering a series of research grants to stimulate innovative research in challenging areas of future importance. The Merck research grants program is open to scientists at all career stages who are affiliated with any research-based institution, university, or company.
Merck Grant Topics
Molecular Glue Degraders & Other Protein-Protein-Interaction Stabilizers
In this category, Merck provides financial support for research initiatives that concentrate on pioneering novel approaches for the screening and discovery of molecular glues. Molecular glues are small molecules capable of inducing proximity between a target protein and an effector protein inside the cells.
This mechanism can lead to degradation, inhibition, or activation of the target protein. Targeting proteins via the molecular glue mechanism holds the promise to tackle non-ligandable proteins that are considered “non-druggable.”
Augmented Reality Digital Twin
Merck seeks research proposals to build an interactive Augmented Reality Digital Twin for their automated system’s monitoring and control. An autonomous laboratory integrates molecular design, chemical synthesis, and biological assays into one continuous process: design-make-test-analyze (DMTA).
This automated system will require an advanced monitoring system. Proposals should include a proof of concept, describe the innovativeness and potential impact, and include proposals for interactive digital twin for dashboarding and/or instrument control using AR technologies.
AI-Driven Drug Discovery
Merck invites research proposals for hit or lead optimization using their AIDDISON drug discovery software. AIDDISON combines artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and computer-aided drug design (CADD) methods to support virtual screening, lead discovery, and lead optimization. Submitted proposals should describe the hit or lead optimization project and be suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Funding Information
Grants of up to €500,000 per year for up to 3 years are available. Specific grant allocations include:
- Discovery strategies for molecular glue degraders and other protein-protein-interaction stabilizers: 1 grant up to €100,000/year for up to 3 years.
- Augmented Reality Digital Twin: 1 grant up to €120,000/year for 1 year.
- AI-Driven Drug Discovery: up to 3 grants comprising AIDDISON software licenses for one year.
Deadline: 31 August 2024
Program Stages
Initial Application
Applicants submit non-confidential applications. Multiple applications in different categories are allowed. Successful applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal under confidentiality and join a deep-dive workshop.
Deep Dive Workshops
In the second stage, finalists submit full proposals and collaborate with Merck managers and scientists to optimize project proposals. These workshops are scheduled for November 2024, culminating in the selection of the research grant winners.
Research Grant Funding
In the final stage, Merck enters into bilateral collaboration agreements with the winners. The research grant funding period includes regular meetings with Merck scientists, offering guidance and collaboration.
Eligibility Criteria
The event is open to individuals aged 18 or older, or teams of individuals, except:
- Employees of Merck and its affiliates.
- Individuals whose employers prohibit entry or acceptance of the grant.
- Individuals impacted by applicable sanctions.
Candidates must ensure they are legally eligible to participate and accept the award.
